QUETTA: At least two Shia Muslims and one other man were killed when a gunman opened fire in an apparent sectarian attack in southwest Pakistan on Sunday, police said.
The shooting took place on the outskirts of Quetta, the capital of oil and gas-rich Balochistan province, which borders Afghanistan and Iran.
“A gunman opened fire on two Shia Muslims and one of their companions, who were riding two motorbikes. All the three men died of their wounds on reaching hospital,” local police official Ameer Dashti told AFP.
The gunman — who had been standing beside the road — escaped after what appeared to have been a targeted sectarian killing, he said. A local intelligence official also confirmed the incident and casualties.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Balochistan is rife with religious militancy, sectarian violence between majority Sunni and minority Shia Muslims, and a regional insurgency waged by separatists.
Shia Muslims account for around a fifth of Pakistan’s 167-million-strong population, which is dominated by Sunni Muslims.
Thousands of people have died in sectarian attacks since the late 1980

The Nations succeed when they are led by leaders with some strength of positive character and attitude. Leaders are models to be followed by the people. Leaders are the most important and prominent figures who set guidelines and examples to be followed by the youth of the Nation. Morally corrupt and degraded leaders ultimately take the nation towards destruction. Such so-called leaders are enemies of Insaniyat, exploiters and intriguers of Hazaras and Hazaragi cause. They don’t belong to any tribe, any religion or any group of people. They don’t deserve to be given the important task of leading and guiding the nation.
Hazaras should not compromise on right principles. They should discourage such corrupt elements from reaching the levels of leadership. Hazaras should disregard themselves from these culprits who have impressed a huge number of youth by getting them involved in evils of ‘sharab-khori’ and ‘zina-kari’. These soul-sellers, in the name of moderation and enlightenment, promote their own evil values.
This is the time to kick these foxy elements out of Hazara lines. It is far better to be without leader than to remain humiliated Hazaras under the banner of these perpetrators and advocates of evil and hypoc
